Mixed feelings about touring the old haciendas in southern Mexico…they have beautiful architecture, grounds, and water caves (“cenotes”), but then I found out that they were essentially slave properties. Only approximately 92 very rich Spaniards “employed” defeated Mayans and stolen Chinese to work at ~1000 haciendas (making sisal from agave, growing crops, and raising animals for slaughter), paying them very low wages and then taking all the money back in exchange for board/food/essentials. This one is now a pseudo-fancy hotel. #DavidLozeau #ArtLife #mexico #mayan #yucatan #yucatanmexico #haciendas (at Hacienda Temozon, Yucatan Mexico)
