The Dogfight

P-40 Warhawks shoot down Messerschmitt BF-109s in a fierce battle in the Mediterranean Theatre in WWII.

** This painting is loosely based on a small group of P-40s with yellow and black checkers on the tails of their planes (the 325th Fighter Group, also know as "The Checkertail Clan") who won several major engagements against much larger groups of BF-109s over Italy in the Summer of 1943. There is an interesting documentary about this group here.

Painting Process
The 36 x 18 background was painted with a variety of yellow, red, and orange acrylics to create a fiery sky over Italy, while the American and German warplanes were painted with gouache. Enamel was used to finely detail the painting and a clear coat was used to unify all of the mediums.
